Rachel Chanoch, the widow of concentration camp survivor Daniel Chanoch, put her words on the Gunskirchen Memorial down in her own hand – in English. The Hebrew text is by Daniel Chanoch: a warning to the world, written 75 years after the liberation.
“For many years, my dear late husband, Daniel Chanoch, waited for this moment – the moment when the memory of Gunskirchen camp would be remembered for generations. I hope that horrors of the kind that happened there will never happen again.” – Rachel Chanoch
Hebrew text by Daniel Chanoch (translation):
“People of the world, 75 years after the victory over Germany, I am still not liberated. To see with my own eyes, as a 12-year-old boy, the sadism. How women and children were sent to the gas chambers, to Birkenau. How the world remained silent, even though there were means to stop the death factory. Allied planes flew over the extermination camps, but did not stop the death. I warn the world against fascism, racism, and dictators. They must be eradicated to the core.”
